The victim, who had managed to escape the scene, said, “The perpetrator beat me up while I tried to retaliate against him.”

However, the villagers held Chaudhary after the victim screamed for help in the night.

“Chaudhary was tied up whole night before the villagers gathered next morning to smear soot and make him walk around the village with shoe-garland before slashing Rs 200,000 fine,” one of the locals said in a telephonic conversation.

Moreover, the victim had pleaded for immediate action rather than filing a police report which ultimately convinced villagers to take actions on their own.

Halusia Police Post chief, Sub Inspector of Police Shankar Pant said, “The locals had smeared soot on the suspect without reporting the case to the police.”

“I have reached the incident site; the details of the case would be furnished after further investigations,” Pant added.

Meanwhile, after the villagers took action against the suspect, he has been on the run and a man hunt has been launched to nab him, Pant shared.
